The summer period is definitely a holiday season. This fact has a positive impact on air traffic, which demonstrated the biggest increase in August. Last month, the total number of flights handled by the specialists of state enterprise Oro Navigacija, compared to the same period last year, increased one and a half times and amounted to 18.4 thousand flights.

“The increasing flight flows most definitely have positive influence upon the financial results of state enterprise Oro Navigacija. July and August were the first months that allowed us to record positive financial result after a very long recess. Those months can be singled out as the first ones since the end of 2019, when the activity of the Enterprise was no longer unprofitable and the Enterprise made profit again”, claimed chief executive officer of state enterprise Oro Navigacija Saulius Batavičius, who also expressed hopes that September may also bring positive financial results, which would in turn enable the Enterprise to announce the first financially profitable annual quarter after a recess that lasted a year and a half.

In August the number of overflights increased by 1.7 times and amounted to 14.3 thousand flights. During the previous month, most of the overflights across the Republic of Lithuania were to the Russian Federation and the air traffic controllers provided services to 5267 flights. Germany took the second place with 1316 flights and Latvia was the third with 994 flights.

The statistics of terminal flights from Lithuania of the previous month singles out the following top countries: the United Kingdom (286 flights), Germany (196 flights) and Latvia (137 flights).

Most of the flights during August within the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania were executed by Air Baltic (1627 flights), Ryanair (1333 flights), Aeroflot (1057 flights) and Finnair, the aircraft of the latter crossed the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania 962 times.

In August, most of the aircraft took off and landed at Vilnius Airport, where 2.7 thousand aircraft received services. Their number exceeded the results of the same period last year by 22 percent. 775 aircraft received services at Kaunas Airport (12 percent more than last year), 321 aircraft received services at Palanga Airport (merely 4 percent less than last year), while the air traffic controllers of Šiauliai Airport provided services to 216 aircraft (32 percent less than last year).

The peak day of this month was the 22nd of August. On that day 646 aircraft crossed the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania.

About the air navigation services provided by the enterprise

In every country seeking to ensure that flights take place safely, efficiently and on time, aircraft are provided air navigation services from the moment the aircraft leaves the parking zone until it lands at the destination airport. State enterprise Oro Navigacija provides these services within the Lithuanian airspace and at Lithuanian airports. The airlines pay route and terminal charges for using the airspace and the air navigation services provided within it. These charges comprise the reimbursement of the expenses incurred by the country, the airspace of which is used. Oro Navigacija covers its expenses from its main activity, i.e., delivery of air navigation services, entirely, and is not maintained from the state budget.
